Pioruny częściej zabijają mężczyzn niż kobiety

Pracownicy centrum prześledzili statystyki śmiertelnych ofiar piorunów w latach 1968-2010. Wynika z nich, że 85 proc. ofiar to mężczyźni, 15 proc. kobiety. Oznacza to, że panowie giną od uderzeń piorunów 5,66 razy częściej niż panie.
We wspomnianym okresie pioruny zabiły w sumie 3 389 Amerykanów, co daje średnią 79 ofiar rocznie. Najgorszy pod tym względem był rok 1969, zginęło wtedy 131 osób. Najlepiej było w latach 2008 i 2010, pioruny zabiły wówczas po 29 osób.
Proporcje śmiertelnych ofiar mężczyzn i kobiet utrzymują się od lat praktycznie na niezmienionym poziomie. Pocieszające jest to, że z każdym rokiem spada liczba zabitych przez pioruny. W latach 1980-1995 było ich 1 318, co dawało średnią roczną 82 zabitych, z czego 85 proc. stanowili panowie.
